Look at all the little Calcifers!
We are off to the States for a month. I have primed myself for Howl's Moving Castle by re-reading it. Sara (7) and Mark (5) have primed themselves for Howl's Moving Castle by watching Spirited Away with me last night. The DVD, a present from Tim, has been sitting (unwatched) on my filing cabinet for at least 6 months, maybe a year; the gift definitely predates my seduction down the anime/manga path by
coffee_and_ink,
telophase, and
rachelmanija. How does my husband know me so well?
Sara has amazingly well-developed Plot Sense. She sits there going, "I bet they're going to turn into pigs." Bingo, they turn into pigs. "I bet she's going to fall." Bingo, she falls. "I bet none of them are her parents"--none of them are. It stuns me.
Mark's comment: "This reminds me of Fullmetal Alchemist."
--------------------------
This morning's conversation:
Mark: "What does 'rech' mean?"
Mummy: "Well; it could mean 'wretch,' someone who's very miserable, or it could mean 'retch,' when you make a sound like blaaaaaaa."
Mark: "I thought it meant when you have a whole lot of treasure and you get to play with it."
Mummy: "Oh, you mean 'RICH'!"

I probably won't be posting much over the next six weeks. But I WILL be at WorldCon!
Thursday 2:00pm Post Colonialism and Cargo Cults (1.5 hrs)
Karin Lowachee
Geoff Ryman (M)
Harry Turtledove
Elizabeth Wein
Is it gifts from the gods or just a military supply run? Portrayal
of indigenous people has not always been fair or free of cultural
bias. Words like "primitive" and "backward" may not be used anymore, but what expectations does the writer bring to these settings?
Thursday 3:30pm Reading (0.5 hrs)
Elizabeth Wein
Friday 11:00am Autographing
Jay Lake
Todd McCaffrey
Irene Radford
Elizabeth Wein
Friday 6:00pm Race, Migration and Refugees
Fiona Avery
Jon Courtenay Grimwood
Kathleen Ann Goonan (M)
Karin Lowachee
Ian McDonald
Elizabeth Wein
A lot of SF is about discovering frontiers. What happens when you
have no choice? What happens when you are "invaded" by the under
dogs? What does SF have to say about a desperate and mobile world.
Saturday 11:00am Harry Potter Has Put Children's Fantasy Back Fifty
Years
Julie Bertagna
Sharyn November
Graham Sleight (M)
Elizabeth Wein
Jane Yolen
Children love Harry Potter. But his universe is quaint, relies on
gimmicks and is, "a little derivative" in its plots. Has its success
been a good thing? Does new material, by the likes of Steve Augarde,
Cornelia Funk, and K. A. Applegate, match up to the classics of the
past?
Sunday 10:00am Kaffeeklatsch
Lillian Stewart Carl
Cecilia Dart-Thornton
Alan Grant
Elizabeth Wein
The YA panel should be fun, huh? My e-mail is ewein2412 [AT] yahoo.co.uk, if anyone else is going and wants to get in touch.

Then she wanted to listen to it in Japanese to hear what they were REALLY saying, except whoops, we don't speak Japanese.
