I tear up whenever I watch Mukhtar's Birthday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgOyTNtsWyY but in this case it was immediate and copious tears streaming down my face, nose blowing, the whole thing. I'm not quite sure why. All they needed in addition to the organ was a trumpet and it would have been perfect.
My favorite part is the number of singers who aren't wearing opera company badges. They're just random shoppers joining in.
That, and the older lady in the pink sweater who happened to be sitting down at first, and who jumped to her feet when the intro began. She knows how to behave during the Hallelujah chorus.
A couple of weeks back, I was at my great-aunt-in-law (I guess that's what she is to me? The mother of my uncle's wife)'s 70th birthday party, and one of my aunt's friends was at Macy's that day, just shopping, and got to experience it.
Now I want to find someone with whom to sing the Hallelujah Chorus with. Drat you, G and S, why did you move and stop throwing that Christmas party? Maybe I'll just have to go to my high school's winter concert and go up on stage when they invite the alums to join in, even though I was never a part of the group that is actually singing in that concert.
i have always wanted to join the alums on stage for their group singing, and I was never part of any of those groups (different groups, same context). I say do it!
I love my town! Singing along with the Hallelujah chorus is a local tradition, so I was not surprised that many random shoppers joined in. And the organ recital still happens several times a day. I was in the week before at lunch time and the organist was playing the Pilgrim's Hymn from Tannhauser.
