I feel fairly confident that I would get A LOT MORE WORK DONE if I were shut in a room for nine hours with paper and ink and my ankles tied to my chair.

But since I am a free woman, I have spent the past hour making extremely diddy WAAF accessories. AMANDA I BLAME YOU.

That is brilliant! Where did you get a penny from 1943?

I should have had fake cigarettes for my Halloween costume. But I don't think they make the candy cigarettes anymore.

i've seen 'em around, but they are called "candy sticks" or something. They are still the same thing. harder to find, though (you have to go to Shrivers on the Ocean City NJ boardwalk!)

The penny is actually a steel penny, how cool is that? they made a bunch of steel pennies during the war to save on copper. I think I picked it up when I worked at the bookstore--we got a whole roll of them once. I was actually looking for a florin or something like that, then remembered my steel penny. The year is a coincidence!

I thought they were tin, but I did know that pennies during the war weren't made of copper. I have the American Girl Doll of Molly, the World War II girl, and she came with one of those pennies.

yup, they're steel. apparently they are the only US circulated coin that can be picked up with a magnet! (i just tried it)

I believe the way my francs and carte d'identite were made was finding images of the front and back online, printing them out, cutting them, and gluing them together. They are very cool. I have started using them as bookmarks.

You'll go blind. You'll wind up with holes in your fingers because the needles are so tiny and sharp. Don't do it.

(I have never tried, but when my needle sizes dropped to 1's and 0's, I had holes in my fingers all the time.)
