Front page of the Perthshire Advertiser:

'DEATH-TRAP' PERTHSHIRE

"...Dr. Stewart Templeton, who lives in the South Street, phoned the PA after navigating the icy pavements.
"He said: '...Absolutely nothing has been done to the pavements...if [the Council were prepared to pay adequate overtime] there would be people willing to go out and shovel the snow.'
"One housebound PA reader, who declined to be named, added, '...the ice and snow-covered pavements [are] a death-trap. It's a disgrace.'
"He suggested, 'Back in the '50s, the town council got men on the dole to shovel snow off the pavements - it's an idea that should be considered again!'"

OR YOU COULD DO IT YOURSELVES, YOU *&&£^$^%* WHINERS!!!!!!

Or they could move to Germany, where as [livejournal.com profile] estara informs me, it is illegal NOT to do it yourself.

Or they could move to Kenya, where my husband assures me no one has ever had to shovel any snow.

My husband also tells me Not to Read the PA before I've had any coffee.

'No householder is at all responsible provided he does not touch the pavement, which after all is owned by the local authority. The moment the householder touches the pavement with a view to improving the situation, but takes action that may lead to a deterioration, his action may render him culpable.' - Lord Davies of Oldham (Deputy Chief Whip (House of Lords), for the government, 2 Feb 2004 (http://angie.theyworkforyou.com/lords/?id=2004-02-02a.444.0)

Oh, I don't endorse it. I deplore it. But it makes people scared.

Thirty-odd years ago it was usual for Britons to clear the pavement in front of their houses after a snowfall. Just part of being a good neighbour. Now - it's not.

Surely you are responsible if someone trips over a pile of snow you've created in the middle of the pavement!

You probably are, I would have thought. Thoroughly anti-social thing to do.

I hope your family have relented. It's a very cold night in the English Midlands. It must be bitter in Perth.

Online can be so cathartic!

Of course the other side of that sandwich are the online trolls who enjoy taking their rants into friendly neighbourhoods just to kick over the sandcastle of the friendly community. Well, there's never only one side to any new invention.

Or you could move here, where not only does it never snow, it never rains!

It'll be eighty degrees and smoggy today.

I think that forecast would be "between eighty and 115 for the foreseeable, with occasional hot winds and fires."

San Francisco, actually. They do get rain, and their summer is neither as fierce or as interminable as ours.

I generally find Pennsylvania to be a nice happy medium. We did get two feet of snow here the other week, but that's not usual, and people do know how to shovel their walks.

Here you get fined if you leave your sidewalks unshoveled. Businesses downtown, too.

Your husband is a wise man. I feel like this when I read the Patriot News without adequate preparation: it is like sticking your head in a bucket of fail.
