 The final ballot for the Nebula Awards is up, along with that of the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy.  The Lion Hunter has made the Norton short list.  I am just.... blown away.  And deeply grateful.  And in such shining company!

But actually I am even MORE blown away by The Scholastic Writing Awards team, who have just dumped on my doorstep a ream of wonderful short stories by young people (and I have to read them all by 10 March).  I am judging some of the finalists for 2008.  I really can't say how delighted I am to be judging this award, as I never ever earned one of those coveted Gold Keys myself, 25 years ago when I was a student.  It feels like I have been given a second chance.

I had a heads-up on this many weeks ago, before it was official, but didn't know for sure until about two weeks ago. And then I didn't want to say anything because it still wasn't up on the SFWA website, though it was all over lots of blogs. but it's really official-official now, so I am basking!

No, that's my fault. That's last year's metaphor - next thing you know I'll be wearing plaids and stripes together. ;) I kept meaning to comment on that post, but I'm a lazy fangirl.

Actually, I'm not much of a story-about-Lancelot fan. Maybe it's overexposure, or the predictability of it all. As soon as he turns up, I think "Tsk. It'll all end in tears," and then the rest of the story is just waiting for that to happen.

As unexpected as the surprise in A Coalition of Lions was, this was so much more unexpected. (Wished for, but not anticipated. Perhaps too much Joss Whedon has taught me not to hope for such things.) And now I really can't wait for the next book.

I am working on it! (in between bouts of self-doubt and frustration at its increasingly lengthy and complex plot). On re-reading your comment I realize I didn't entirely take in what you meant about the story making you happy... now I do. see? see? didn't I say so?

and as to Lancelot--it's not your fault--I very clearly made reference to it in the title of this post. I'm just flaky.
