I have got many visitors including Gramma, who has recovered from her three broken bones of last winter and has made the flight to Scotland once again. Here I am (on the right) at Elcho Castle, near Perth, with my aunt Kate. We are picking pears in the ancient orchard. (The hut in the background is the Historic Scotland gift shop, and the ruin is part of the curtain wall.)

I am busy hostessing but I wanted to let you guys know what a wonderful bunch of friends you are--your birthday wishes over the last couple of days have really made me happy. Many of them were very unexpected. As
sovay says, "October is the best month EVER."
My absolutely favorite present is from Kate--it is a lion's head pendant (no. 95) cut out of an Ethiopian coin. I have coveted one of these for many years now. (This is the same woman who gave me my Heelies last year.)

Date: 2007-10-04 11:20 am (UTC)As for your birthday present, I am done with it. Yes. Sorry it is late, but here you go. I kinda fucked it up when i went to spray a sealer on it (pencil is a very bad medium to leave exposed) but apparently I am out of it and so it just splattered spots everywhere. Damn.
So. It's a picture of a dream that either I swear is IN the book "The Winter Prince" where Medraut sees himself in Africa, or in a plain there or something. And I always got the vibe of Turunesh there, though now I'm flipping through my copy of "The Winter Prince" and for the life of me whatever. I can't find it. Anyway, maybe I dreamt that Medraut had a dream where he saw her. Or at least the presence of her was in the air... ANYWAY! I have no way to explain why this image came to me other than that it either exists or doesn't in the text. And I think Turunesh is inspired by Skin from Skunk Anansie...
So! Happy birthday to the author of my favorite book! Yay!

Date: 2007-10-04 11:41 am (UTC)wow. THANK YOU! That was so fast, too--I need to have birthdays more often. (now I am just quietly going to go away by myself, boggled by other people's talent)
The dream is on page 95 of The Winter Prince, at the bottom. I have always thought of it as the central scene of the book, a vision of past and future rolled into one. There is a variant on it, which Telemakos dreams, at the end of The Empty Kingdom. Turunesh is not actually in the dream as I wrote it but... well, it's not inappropriate for her to be there.
Happy birthday to the author of my favorite book
you are too, too kind! thank you!

Date: 2007-10-04 11:46 am (UTC)Yes, I always thought the moment in Medraut's dream was something very central to the story and to his own character. perhaps I was combining the reunion of Medraut and Turunesh in A Coalition of Lions with the dream. I don't know. It's 5 am and I have no reasoning at this hour.
and in response to your dancing icon: I LOVE the chocolate.

Date: 2007-10-04 02:40 pm (UTC)what is the dress inspired by in that photo? is it a medieval event? do you work there or was it just for fun? I'm working on a couple of ren fair dresses for myself and a friend (though...technically neither one of them is Renaissance style. Hopefully neither of us will be run out by the Rennies hee hee)

Date: 2007-10-04 11:11 pm (UTC)The dresses in the photo are actually "dress up clothes" provided (AND MADE) by the lady who runs the Historic Scotland hut. Kate and I got dressed up because my daughter wouldn't do it unless we did! The dress that I am wearing actually belongs to the "Green Lady" who is the resident ghost at Huntingtower Castle, on the other side of Perth (Elcho Castle's resident ghost is a Gray Lady and wears a nightgown)
I love Elcho Castle. It is really near to us but feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. I wrote a large portion of A Coalition of Lions at the picnic tables there, with a thermos of coffee for breakfast and my infant son asleep in his car seat on the grass beneath the table. Since they have replanted the "medieval" orchard we always make a pilgrimage out there to pick fruit at this time of year.

Date: 2007-10-04 02:54 pm (UTC)Theoretically, the days should be consecutive, but if you're unavoidably doing something icky over your birthday, the celebration can start when you're ready to enjoy it.
I do love your dresses
