I took Mark and Sara to the swimming pool today. It is the last day of the school holidays in Perth, and a lot of other families were doing the same thing. At noon they shut down the fountains and waterfalls and we all had a minute of silence for the tsunami victims.

It was an eerie place to observe this particular minute of silence, standing up to my chest in water with my children clinging to me.

I wondered if everyone else thought so too. It made me quite emotional--I had to kiss both weasels many times when it was over--and a little ashamed to be doing something so crass as SWIMMING (which goes to show you how pointless certain kinds of guilt can be).

Swimming crass?

Never!

You go on living, which is the only way we can honor the dead. The living who suffer gain nothing from our guilt, only from our contributions to reputable charities.
