The kids were supposed to go to school dressed as characters from their favorite books.  Sara's first choice was Jane Eyre, but then she fell back on the ol' Edward Elric option because he has better hair.  (She doesn't like putting her hair up.)  Mark, after MUCH persuasion, went as Horrid Henry, who I believe is a uniquely British phenomenon (he is not the same as Horrible Harry)--though the author, Francesca Simon, is American.

To show solidarity I started constructing a Mordred costume for myself, when it occurred to me that my own hair is not very Mordredy, so I went for the Harriet Vane option.  Who knew that Good Hair was such a deciding factor in choosing one's Favorite Literary Character?

D'awwww!

What, no pictures of Harriet? ;)

Tell Ed Elric she looks fantastic. (I once saw an Ed Elric carrying a picket sign reading 6' 3".) I can't comment on Horrid Henry, but I am sure he's excellent too.

But where's the Harriet Vane photo?

I know who none of these people are. (Except Jane Eyre, I know who she is.)

Hair is KEY in choosing the literary character to represent. If you dont' have access to a good supply of wigs, at least.

I loved those days in school! Except I can only remember one, from fourth grade, when I was obsessed with those utterly teen series like Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley and Girl Talk. I went as Rowena from the Girl Talk series. What a horrible choice, when I was also reading Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. THAT would have been a costume.

Nowadays I sort of wish someone would throw a literary costume party (well maybe I just should do it) - I'd be Ginevra Godwin from Susan Howatch's The Wheel of Fortune in a heartbeat! The scene when she arrives back to Oxmoon, a widow of one month, in a turquoise travelling suit.

I used to stick a coat hanger through my braids and go as Pippi.

First reaction: kawaiiiii
Second reaction: these children will eventually have multitudes wanting to marry them and have their own kids because rarely have I seen such a beautiful red hair colour.
Third reaction: the cosplay outfits are perfect.

Cute!

So what about the Harriet Vane picture? (and who do you see as your Wimsey?)

Oh, so you ARE Harriet Vane! I never noticed the resemblance until now.

I saw the lower entry, and I assume she is the woman who winds up marrying Wimsey. I've only read one Sayers book so far (it was Murder Must Advertise), and I'm not sure she was in it yet. They were definately not married.

Are they books that ought to be read in order, or can I pick up from either of those two?

Well, I think you win the prize for cutest kids ever. <333 Give them my love.

Also, eeeeee. You are Harriet. But I do wish I could see you as Mordred, too.

I love you as Harriet Vane! And Mark and Sara look just right. Milly is a Horrid Henry fan, too, although he's been nudged out a bit by Mr Gum and his friend Billy William the Third (the most disgusting butcher in the land).

I ordered them used off of Amazon last night. Wahoo! Yay! New used books!

OF COURSE. It all makes so much sense.

...but I still want to see you as Mordred.

(on a side note, I was wondering--do you have sort of a birthday in mind for Telemakos? Because DF-wise, I have him for March, because he seems like kind of a March boy to me, but if you actually had something already I would be more than happy to switch. /weird concerns.)

There are four books so far, by Andy Stanton. Quite surreal in a Spike Milligan/Vic Reeves sort of way, peopled by oddities but very funny and really rather domestic and gentle in its humour. Milly loves them, and so do I. The first one is You're a Bad Man, Mr Gum, and you can get it on CD as well as in paperback, which is a great way to get into the feel of the books. Hope they win Mark over; I tired of Horrid Henry a LONG time ago, but I love reading Mr Gum to Milly (she reads them to herself, too, but often requests I read them to her at bedtime, and it's always fun).

What lovely bright clothes your children are wearing, and how cheerful they look. :) When one is habitually dressed in 'office black' or variations of it, along with colleagues, it's nice to see colour like this.

I like 'Busman's Honeymoon' almost as much as 'Gaudy Night'. You make a lovely Harriet Vane - but no studded dog collar...?
