The thing about Lancelot is that he's not just a cookie-cutter hero. I thought he was dull for years and years. I was hooked by T.H. White's portrayal of him (and then Guy Gavriel Kay's, although that is so far non-canon it doesn't really count). He's not the do good hero that he wishes he were, and he is so very much a part of the downfall of Camelot that he actually does become interesting.

And, certainly, Lance and Gwen are more interesting than Tristan and Isolde.
