I think of the nipple-cover version of a pre-bra as being a 5th grade thing. This was true when I was in 5th grade (1965-6) and was true when my daughter was in 5th grade (1999-2000). Some variety of sports bra was the popular choice among my daughter's flat chested friends, not anything lacy or frilly.
