Here (http://ballads.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/static/images/sheets/25000/24991.gif) is an example of YA fiction from Elizabethan England. It is not a novel, but a broadside ballad, 'The Honour of an Apprentice of London'. The hero of the story is, of course, a London apprentice who after some highly improbable adventures ends up marrying a princess. It was usual for a boy to begin an apprenticeship in the mid to late teens.
