I'm pretty sure it's just attention-seeking. Mostly a media issue, in my opinion. There was quite a controversial article published in the Times Educational Supplement the day before the panel event, which CLEARLY was written in ignorance and with intent to provoke, and indeed it's elicited the desired outrage and articulate defensive responses. I make a point of cold-shouldering such clickbait.
